| We believe that
heartworms are the most dangerous
internal parasite that dogs face and the key to effective heartworm control is
prevention! |
| Heartworm disease can cause permanent damage to
your dog’s heart if it goes undetected. Therefore we recommend the following
prevention programs: | |
| For Puppies |
| A year-round prevention program should be started as soon as your puppy
is four weeks old. Although newborn puppies are susceptible to heartworm
infections, only puppies four weeks old or older can be prescribed heartworm
preventatives. |
| It takes time for the heartworm larvae to develop to the stage where
they can be detected reliably. We recommend that puppies be tested for
heartworm when they are one year old. Even though the puppy may have been on a
heartworm prevention program since he was four weeks old, there is always the
possibility that he or she was infected at an earlier age. |

| For Your New Dog |
| We test all dogs, one year of age or older, for heartworms before we
prescribe a heartworm prevention plan. |
| We then recommend year-round heartworm prevention. |
| Continuing Protection for Your Dog |
| We recommend that all dogs maintain a year-round heartworm prevention
program. In addition we also recommend dogs be tested annually for heartworms.
The price of a heartworm test is small compared to the lasting damage that
heartworm disease can inflict on your pet. |
